Well, how random it is, is up to you, so you have some control over how terrifying? Like, if you want to go for super scary, you could choose the 3rd entry on the 8th Google page when you search "fanfic" or something (FYI: I got this link doing that experiment). Or, for a more controlled experience, you could keep it to your flist or Delicious network/subscription.
Or, you could to something like pick an author, at random, from the Blanket Permission list. :P
